The Borough of Greencastle is committed to preserving the beautiful, historic sycamore trees that have long defined the character of E. Baltimore Street while also ensuring the safety of our residents and visitors.

As part of the Borough’s ongoing tree maintenance program, all tagged sycamore shade trees along E. Baltimore Street are routinely evaluated by a certified arborist. During the most recent inspection, one sycamore tree located near the intersection of E. Baltimore Street and N. Linden Avenue was determined to have deteriorated to the point that it poses a public safety hazard and should be removed.

After reviewing the arborist’s recommendation, Borough Council approved the removal of this tree. While the removal of such a prominent and historic tree is not an easy decision, protecting the safety of pedestrians, motorists, nearby properties, and the traveling public remains the Borough’s highest priority.

Borough Council approved Bartlett Tree Experts to remove the one identified tree and perform routine pruning and maintenance on the remaining sycamore trees to support their continued health and preserve this treasured streetscape.

The tree work is scheduled for Thursday, August 6, weather permitting. Temporary traffic control measures will be in place during the work to ensure the safety of motorists, pedestrians, contractors, and Borough staff.

The Borough will continue to monitor and maintain the remaining sycamore trees through routine inspections and professional care to help preserve this historic streetscape for the community.
