Residents Urged to Remove Standing Water in Receptacles to Reduce Mosquito Breeding Risk

WNV

The Franklin County Mosquito and Tick-borne Disease program is working throughout the county to monitor, control and mitigate the risk of mosquito and tick-borne diseases in our community through surveillance, control, and education. While NO CASES OF WEST NILE VIRUS HAVE BEEN INDENTIFIED IN THE BOROUGH OF GREENCASTLE, there have been cases identified in some areas of Franklin County.

Per Jason Goetz, Mosquito & Tick Borne Disease Control Specialist, Franklin County Planning Department, Franklin County has 4 new pools of mosquitoes that have tested positive for West Nile Virus. The PA Department of Environmental Protection’s Mosquito-Borne Disease Program will be conducting a truck mounted ultra-low volume (ULV) mosquito control operation in Guilford and Greene Township, Franklin County. Residential and recreational areas in and around Main Street, Fayetteville, Ragged Edge Road, Guilford Hills, and surrounding communities will be sprayed for adult mosquitoes. The control work will begin around sunset (7:31 PM) on Tuesday, September 7th. If this operation is cancelled, it will be rescheduled for Wednesday, September 8th. Please contact Jason Goetz at 717-261-3855 if you have any questions or concerns.

Residents of Franklin County can take steps to reduce or eliminate the risk of mosquito breeding habitats. Many mosquito species can be kept at bay, especially the Asian Tiger Mosquito, if citizens do their part by removing any artificial container containing water around their property. This includes but is not limited to buckets, old tires, clogged rain gutters, bird baths, unkempt swimming pools; anything that can hold water.
